Welcome to a new year and new faces in Room 5. We currently have 18 year 1 & 2 students who are all set for an exciting new year. Due to some technical problems we are off to a late start with our blog but will be publishing photos and work very shortly. Remember we love to hear your comments, so please leave a comment that we can read.

Countdown to Christmas

We are counting down to Christmas with only two weeks to go until the end of school. We have been doing some wonderful artwork in class following our visit to the quarry art centre. This has included some Picasso art, mosiacs, clay and woollen kiwi pom poms. We will be posting some photos this week so have a look at our works. We are pretty proud of them!!

Quarry Art Visit and Town Basin

We had an awesome day visiting the Quarry Art Centre and the town basin to look at all of the fantastic work that is being done by local artists. We were shown around the Quarry Art Centre by Andrea who explained how local artists created their works on site and were displayed for sale within the quarry. From there we walked to the town basin via Whangarei Library, stopping to look at the pou and some sculptures and murals before going on to the Town Basin and doing the sculpture boardwalk down to the wave and waka sculpture. We will now be creating some of our own works of art in the next few weeks so keep checking to see what we have created

Next week we will be off to the Quarry Craft Trust and Town Basin to look at art work by some of our local artists and to also look at some sculptures down at the town basin. Check out our photos next week to see how our trip went.

For the next six weeks we will be learning the skills of AFL (Australian Football League). This week we learned to kick the ball using a drop punt to each other and how to aim our kicks. We had fun kicking to each other and then using the teachers for target practice.

Term 4

Well we have all had a great break and are back for an action packed last term before the Christmas Holidays. Our topic this term is 'Our place, Our Artists'. We will be looking at the works of some local artists and hopefully spend a day in our local community looking at local artists works. We have a very busy term coming up with end of year testing, cricket and hockey coaching, swimming and six weeks of whole school AFL development. It will be an exciting time so keep checking in and remember to leave a comment at the bottom of the post so we can see who is visiting us!

As part of 'our history' topic study this term we created 3d pepeha using wool, cardboard, fabric, cellophane, paper, wood, pipecleaners and buttons. The pepeha represent our whanau, our location and our favourite things we like to do. These took a while to complete but the effort was worth it and they look awesome hanging up in our room.

Whanau Day

Today we had a whanau day where we had family in to share in class activities such as sign, reading, board games, outdoor games and computers. We had a wonderful turnout and our children were able to enjoy a fun morning showing off all of their wonderful skills to whanau members. At the end of the activities we had a great shared lunch with heaps of nice goodies that were enjoyed by all.

Rugby World Cup Paint It Red

As Northland were hosting two Rugby World Cup games involving Canada, Japan and Tonga who all play in red colours, we celebrated this event by having a red day at school. The junior syndicate painted flags for these nations and dressed in red. Some of us were lucky enough to go to Okara park to watch these great games.

Room 4 & 5 visited Whangarei Museum to look at what life used to be like in the last 100 years. We looked at an old school where we dressed up, baked scones, visited the museum and Clarke Homestead and went for a train ride. We all had an exciting day and enjoyed looking at the way life used to be.

We had to mix the flour and butter together and get all the lumps out.

For the past 3 days I was fortunate enough to take our fantastic school rippa rugby team to Auckland to compete in the Rippa World Cup where we came away New Zealand champions. Whau Valley School represented New Zealand and won the final over Wales (Arrowtown School) 50 - 25.

Well we have had a long term and it is now holiday time. Sadly we are losing seven of our class members who are moving up to the middles. However we will be getting three new class members at the beginning of term 3. Next term we will be looking at our heritage and also look back at how things used to be in Northland and Whangarei. Baking and Sandwich making

This term we have been looking at our local produce. For the last couple of weeks we have been looking at the different ways we can adapt fruit for eating. So far we have juiced, baked and created exciting sandwiches. Here are some pictures from sandwich making today.

The best part of making my sandwich was eating it. I had cucumber, cheese, carrot, mayo and beetroot. My sandwich was nice and I liked the cheese slice.

Visit to New World Regent

This term we have had had some awesome trips to look at our local produce. We followed up our orchard visit with a visit to Regent New World. We got to see all of the fruit and veges, went in to the cool store and watched the trucks unloading at the back of the shop. Here is some of what we saw.

Maths - Geometry and Algebra

For the past couple of weeks we have been looking at shapes and patterns in class. As part of this we have looked at the art of Victor Vasserely who produces Op Art. Here is a piece of his work.

We had a great visit to Huanui orchard. As well as looking around the orchard we were lucky enough to pick some fruit and see some fruit going through some grading machines.

Our Place, Our Produce - Huanui Orchard visit

On Wednesday we will be visiting Huanui Orchard to look at some of our local produce. Room 5 are curious to find out what happens at an orchard and what we can see there. Here are some of the questions we want to find answers to.

How many different fruits do you grow at the orchard?

How do you get the fruit to the supermarkets?

Week one was New Zealand Sign Language week. One of our class members is deaf and is learning sign and Room 5 is learning along with him. Each day we practice sign and all of the class are enjoying it.

Term 2

We are back for another great term. We had an awesome first term and have an exciting term planned. Our class is currently looking at geometry for maths and our topic this term is 'Our Place, Our Produce'. In week 3 we will be visiting Huanui Orchard to look at how food is collected and graded so keep an eye out for the latest info.

Rocky Shore

Our junior syndicate had an awesome day at Ngunguru and Whangaumu. After looking at rock pools and the beach at Ngunguru we moved on to Whangaumu for a well deserved lunch and swim.
